Job Summary

The Department of Transportation Services is hiring an Equipment Mechanic III. This position maintains and repairs heavy duty equipment and light duty equipment, with special considerations to the university’s Transit Department. These repairs include working on trucks with hydraulic implements, lift equipment, emergency lighting, diesel engines, overhaul/rebuild or replacement of automotive components. This position also services the unique systems that are outfitted on the variety of transit buses. These systems are including but not limited to ADA lift systems, articulated couplers, and mobile HVAC systems.

Who We Are

Transportation Services administers the Buff Bus routes connecting residence halls with campus, Buff Bus advertising, university's fleet vehicles and oversees campus' sustainable commuting options.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


  • Rebuild, replace and overhaul engine, transmission, alternator, starter, fuel systems, brakes, computer control units, air conditioning, etc., with operational resources in a manner so as to return vehicles in a timely, proper and cost-effective manner.

  • Maintain all documentation and fleet management database information.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Diagnose and repair defective auto and equipment components.

  • Inform serviced parties (customers) of vehicle condition.

  • Prepare all necessary documents and comply with all rules, regulations, practices, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).

  • Advise of possible solution (i.e. repair, replace, fabricate.)

Fabrication and/or Modification

  • Oversee and perform discretionary alteration and modification of obsolete parts or tools.

  • Guarantee quality and safety is top priority.

Professional Development

  • Attend appropriate classes and look to industry standards as well as trends that will need additional education.

  • Take Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests.

    Vehicle Recovery

  • Assist stranded motorists in emergency circumstances such as providing information and performing service and calling for tow truck if needed during business hours as well as weekends and evenings when Supervisor is not available.

What You Should Know

  • Work schedule: 8-5 Monday-Friday; on occasion may be on call or respond to campus emergencies outside of regular shift hours.

  • This position will be subject to random drug testing per federal requirements.

What We Require

  • 4 years of related experience to include:

  • 3 years of experience on heavy duty vehicles (1 ton and above) and experience with diesel engines. Education substitution: Two years of diesel education/certification and one year of experience on heavy duty vehicles (1 ton and above).

  • 1 years of experience on light duty automotive vehicles

  • Must be able to pass a criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background check.

  • Must either currently have or have the ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with P2 passenger endorsement within 3 months of hire.

  • Pre-placement physical and drug screening required.
