University of Colorado Postdoctoral Research Associate in Boulder, Colorado
Postdoctoral Research Associate
We are encouraging applications for a Research Associate at the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC)/Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), at the University of Colorado, to conduct innovative research in the areas of understanding the “variability and change of oceanic conditions over the Northeast US coast induced by climate modes (e.g., ENSO, NAO, and Indian Ocean basin mode) and external forcing (funded by NOAA)” and “role of Indian Ocean in generating decadal climate variability (funded by NSF)”. The postdoc will reside in ATOC.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Who We Are
The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado Boulder (http://www.colorado.edu/) provides a world-class, interdisciplinary research and educational environment to examine the dynamical, physical, and chemical processes that occur in the atmosphere and ocean. A major theme is the establishment of a physical basis for observing, modeling, and understanding climate and global change.
The University of Colorado Boulder is located in a region having the greatest concentration of geophysical researchers in the nation and perhaps the world. The proximity of ATOC to this atmospheric and oceanic science excellence (https://www.colorado.edu/atoc/research/boulder-labs) is the foundation of our unique philosophy and vision, which elevates our department to one of worldwide prominence (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/geosciences?fbclid=IwAR292U23GrCoaQt35m0Xckx58EZNILJKlmcp1TPajK7c1XzXgwNf-T0Y0ws) . The guiding principle of ATOC is to be the focal point for atmospheric and oceanic science education and research training in this geographic region of world-renowned excellence. The University of Colorado, Boulder was ranked number one in atmospheric science in ShanghaiRanking's 2018, 2019, and 2020 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Perform research in observational analysis using statistic tools with modeling experiments using coupled global climate models (e.g., NCAR’s Community Earth System Model) and ocean models. The successful applicant will work with Prof. Weiqing Han and Dr. Mike Alexander, in collaboration with the Climate Change Research section at NCAR (Dr. Gerald A Meehl and Aixue Hu).
What You Should Know
The initial appointment is for one year with possible renewal for the second year or longer contingent upon performance and availability of funds. The position may start in the summer of 2021 or on a mutually agreeable date.
