We are looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to join our Splunk Observability team. As a backend software engineer, you will closely collaborate with Architects and Product Managers to design, implement and operate large-scale distributed systems, streaming data pipelines, and advanced algorithms that power the Splunk Observability and Network Performance Monitoring (NPM) products. We learn quickly through frequent iteration. We are passionate about solving customers’ problems. We have ambitious goals to create best-of-its-kind products. At Splunk - NPM, we focus on eliminating cloud application failure by building tools that quickly and automatically pinpoint service disruption -- both caused externally from faults in cloud infrastructure and API providers and internally from bugs and configuration errors. The underlying tech is unique in its extremely low-overhead collection and analysis, its full coverage, and its ability to be deployed in minutes with no code changes or configuration. These allow Splunk to provide SREs and DevOps engineers with smart alerts and a complete, easy-to-read picture of their deployment -- dramatically accelerating fault resolution.
This role offers a chance to join a small, focused team within Splunk as we change the way engineers understand their production applications using observability tools. We're crafting ways to visualize and summarize complex datasets and offer unique opportunities to impact the next generation of monitoring and observability tools.
What You'll Do
You will participate in the design, implementation, maintenance, and evolution of Splunk Observability backend systems.
You will deploy, operate, and scale Splunk NPM’s backend services in production environments.
You will explore and brainstorm new NPM product features that help you operate systems more efficiently.
You will improve engineering quality and operation excellence for the whole team.
Use our products to debug real problems and provide expert feedback on areas for improvement.
Work embedded within the engineering team to design and automate software and infrastructure deployment process using GitOps, Kubernetes, and Helm
Experience automating deployment and monitoring of software services.
Several years of experience building large-scale backend systems.
Experience driving technical designs for backend systems.
Experience with DevOps practices and comfortability operating distributed systems.
The ability to adapt quickly and can solve problems through uncertainty.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Leadership and mentoring skills and the ability to work with engineers and non-engineers of various skill levels.
Passionate about building elegant and powerful tools to solve customer problems.
Experience with AWS-based infrastructure, Kubernetes, Helm, Prometheus. Also desirable: Kafka, Flux/Argo CD, OpenTelemetry.
3+ years experience with one or more programming languages such as Go, Java, Python, C/C++
Automating AWS / Kubernetes / Helm using GitOps
Setting up Preview Environments on Pull Requests
Create a process to deploy Grafana dashboards from Git
Replacing existing single-tenant services with scalable multi-tenant services
Create a process for running full SAAS product on a local Kubernetes cluster for developer productivity
