You are unique: as an exceptional, passionate, customer facing, hands-on Solution Architect you will help customers transform to realize the benefits of modern applications and architectures on the VMware Tanzu portfolio. You will also work closely with the Tanzu engineering and Solution Engineer (SE) teams to transform the way our customers build and run their software. You are a problem solver and the thought of collaborating with a team to help companies transform to meet the challenges of tomorrow excites you.

THE TEAM

At VMware we believe that Modern Platform, and by extension Modern Applications, will transform the next generation of enterprise infrastructure and applications the way Virtualization and Java have in the past. Customers are looking to containers to avoid lock in with public clouds and the industry has aligned around Kubernetes as the orchestration engine for these containers and Cloud Foundry to deploy cloud native applications. The complete Tanzu portfolio consists of products and services that transform how enterprises build and operate modern applications on Kubernetes. The Platform Services team helps customers derive the value of Tanzu technology to deliver the benefits of container application platforms. It turns out that ultimately successful use of technology requires some changes in people and process. We help our customers use a product-centric mindset to build a balanced team and a streamlined pathway to production, leaving app product teams unencumbered to deliver value to their customers. Our Product Managers and Platform Engineers pair with customer counterparts to transfer knowledge, culture and practices while achieving project goals and deliver mission value.

PLATFORM SERVICES ENGINEERS are responsible for:

  • Delighting our customers by ensuring successful outcomes to their platform and application journeys.

  • Hands-on deployment and optimization of complex architectures, and advancing customer thinking and awareness within the Modern Applications space

  • The ideal candidate is action-oriented, collaborative, a continuous learner, has strong customer presence and must have a desire to contribute to VMware’s intent to capture modern application workloads

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute on customer engagements both as a member of a team for complex engagements and solo for simpler engagements

  • Deploy and operationalize platforms built on Kubernetes by designing for storage integration, container networking, service routing, observability, and platform security

  • Provide deployment, operational assistance and guidance for VMware’s Cloud Foundry offering including; monitoring, management, disaster recovery, security compliance/auditing, networking, storage, service brokers and build packs

  • Drive platform adoption by working with application teams to embrace modern practices around developer workflow, application enhancements, build and packaging, application lifecycle, and observability

  • Provide experienced DevSecOps guidance and support for platform accreditation and authorization, in particular, ATO

  • Support a written culture and contribute to our technical content library

  • Gives and takes guidance to/from customers, teammates and leadership where needed

  • Drives high quality output of both self and team for customers and internal initiatives

  • Work with customer platform engineers to minimize and automate toil

  • Design and implement continuous integration and continuous delivery processes to deliver customer apps to production, fostering a culture of continuous process improvement

  • Helps with pre-sales, conferences and general Kubernetes evangelism as time permits

  • Is an effective member of the broader Open Source and Modern Applications ecosystem, contributing to Kubernetes SIG’s, Meetups and similar

  • Fosters a sense of collaboration through activity and presence

  • Reports and manages time with minimal oversight

  • Works effectively with a remote and distributed team

  • Content development: consistently produces high quality artifacts for marketing, sales and product.

  • Assists all team members when they are stuck, and helps others level up their skills by providing kind and direct feedback

PREFERRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

  • 5+ years of experience in a customer-facing technical pre-sales, support, or consulting role

  • Domain expertise in infrastructure or programming concepts

  • Robust proficiency in Linux & CLI, several years of experience in VM infrastructure

  • Ideal candidates will have familiarity with programming concepts and general SDLC practices

  • Familiarity with application developer challenges, interests and deployment patterns for Modern Applications

  • Hands on experience with distributed systems and concepts in a real-world environment

  • Some specific technical competencies you will be able to leverage:

  • Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, OpenShift, Docker, Mesosphere, Rancher, Chef, Ansible, Puppet, or related automation / orchestration tools

  • Linux - As the de facto base operating system for all public cloud providers and Modern Applications technologies effective skills working with Linux on the CLI are required.

  • Networking & Security - Some of the more complex scenarios which occur with Modern Applications projects and technologies involve both east / west and ingress /egress networking and security considerations.

  • Observability - Experience configuring, using and optimizing observability tools such as Prometheus/Grafana, Wavefront, Datadog

  • Reliability Engineering - A drive towards constant iteration and improvement of technologies and processes is a fundamental part of being successful with Modern Applications projects and technologies.

  • Go & Programming - Some of our projects require building and extending tooling and projects. GO is preferred, but any modern language is acceptable as a starting point.

  • Cloud Hyper-scalers Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud experience

  • VMware vSphere / ESXi / NSX-T experience

  • Concourse, Spinnaker, Jenkins, Bamboo, TeamCity or other Continuous Integration tools experience for production platform automation and release engineering

  • Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices experience in support of production systems

  • Demonstrated ability to initiate change across the US Federal customers —DOD, IC, Civilian — including strategy and adoption of platforms, processes and modernization initiatives

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Leads by doing

REQUIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

  • Current TS/SCI or Top Secret US Federal clearance

  • Knowledge of and operational experience with methodologies related to agile, DevSecOps, DevOps

  • Ability to travel 50% of the time
