Division/Department: ManufacturingJob Title: MachinistReports to: Manufacturing SupervisorDate: Nov 2, 2020GENERAL PURPOSEThe Machinist (Prototype, Toolroom, Mechanical Assembler) convertscomputer-generated mechanical drawings into CNC using Master Cam software;produces machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating computernumerical control (CNC) machines; maintains CNC Mill equipment asnecessary; coordinates, schedules, and produces proof of conceptcomponents and advises RandD principals and Mechanical Engineers on practicalmachining aspects of planned projects. The Machinist trains technicians onpractical CNC principles and maintains quality and safety standards. Inaddition, the Machinist sets up and operates a variety of machine tools toproduce precision parts and measuring instruments; and performs repetitivework-station or line-assembly operations to produce components or to assemblethose components into a completed product, when necessary, to supportRandD or Manufacturing. They may also fabricate and modify parts to make orrepair machine tools, applying knowledge of shop mathematics, metalproperties,ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineeringplans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, referenceplanes, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpretinggeometric dimensions and tolerances (GDandT). Plans stock inventory by checking stock to determine the amountavailable; anticipating needed stock; placing and expediting orders forstock; verifying receipt of stock. Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zeroand reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation,and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basicmath, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs. Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- andfour-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams,gears, and stops. Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, andsample workpieces; adhering to design standards. Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, andcutting, including turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasingoperations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshootingprocesses; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacingworn tools; adhering to best practice procedures and processes. Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenancerequirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshootingmalfunctions; calling for repairs.OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Provides training to technicians as requested to teach them CNC milloperation, creation of CNC models, and techniques to render machine parts Other duties as assignedSUPERVISORY DUTIES NoneJOB QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY Conceptual skills and the ability to translate mechanical drawings intomachine parts The functional and technical skills required to plan all stages ofconverting raw materials into finished designs Controls and instrumentation abilities needed to implement the correctfeeds and speeds necessary to machine differing materials, such asaluminum, stainless steel, copper, nylon, etc Exacting attention to detail, necessary to maintain the tighttolerances required of prototype designs EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING High School diploma or the equivalent EXPERIENCE Experience with CNC using Master Cam software preferred Minimum two (2) years of experience as a mechanical assembler CMM and Quality assurance experience preferred Stress Relieving, pre and post final machine experience preferred
