Professional Research Assistant

Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

The Neeves Lab in the Departments of Bioengineering and Pediatrics, Section of Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant seeks a talented, passionate and industrious candidate to join our team as a fulltime Professional Research Assistant at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. Research in the Neeves lab ( ) focuses on applying engineering science to blood diseases, with a specific emphasis in bleeding and thrombotic disorders. This position is for a NIH sponsored project on venous thromboembolism in pre-menopausal women on different forms of contraception.

Specific Position Duties:

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate to support work on projects at the interface of bioengineering and pulmonary medicine. Responsibilities include:

  1. Collect, process, and record patient samples.

  2. Extract RNA/DNA and prepare samples for sequencing.

  3. Isolate blood cells and plasma and carry out coagulation assays.

  4. Measure platelet function using clinical and research assays.

  5. Collaborate with PIs, PRAs, graduate students, and postdocs.

  6. Develop research protocols, carry out experiments collect, analyze and report data to support ongoing research in the lab under the supervision of Dr. Neeves.

  7. Interact with postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students and others in the laboratory to facilitate ongoing research in the lab.

  8. Maintain inventory of laboratory consumables and chemicals and placing orders as needed.

  9. Act as laboratory safety representative by providing training and facilitating proper disposal of waste.

The successful applicant is highly motivated, driven and collaborative, and has demonstrated the ability to independently complete research projects.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A BS degree or equivalent doctorate degree from an accredited college or university awarded in a relevant discipline such as Molecular and/or Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other closely related field.

  • Research laboratory experience.

  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Desired or Preferred Requirements:

  • Expertise in blood handling.

  • Experience in biochemical assays (ELISA, total protein/DNA/RNA).

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (Western blot, flow cytometry, mass spectroscopy)

  • Expertise in human subject research.

  • Experience in lab management.
