VMware Staff Software Engineer - Tanzu Workflows and UI in Denver, Colorado
The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
The broader VMware Tanzu Mission Control engineering team is working to build out an API-driven platform that makes running Kubernetes in production easier for developers and cluster operators alike. We’re working to establish an industry-leading set of services and experiences for multi-cluster operations.
The Tanzu Workflows team is currently building out a core part of this product – a SaaS based platform that integrates with Kubernetes clusters. We work closely with all engineering teams across Tanzu, Product, and UX to ensure we’re building excellent user experiences across all interfaces (UI, API, CLI). As a Staff Engineer on the team, you’ll have significant opportunity to architect solutions to do so.
You may like working with us if you’re looking for:
An enthusiastically remote-friendly team (we were all remote long before Covid).
A team that prioritizes equitable treatment, inclusivity, and diversity.
A team that strives for empathy and kindness in our work – we mentor and teach one another, review each other’s code thoughtfully, and pair on complex problems.
Space within a team to take on new challenges and grow.
Time and space to transform complex solutions into simple ones.
What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?
As the development of TMC moves beyond the early-stage product lifecycle, a need has emerged for a Staff level engineer focused on scalable UI infrastructure. As the codebase and team grow, we need to address issues of scale we’re already seeing and look to the future to ensure we’re setting ourselves up for sustainable success. You’ll be assessing our current infrastructure, identifying areas for immediate and long-term improvements, designing solutions for them, and leading the team in their implementation.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
In short, you’ll be:
Contributing to the design and implementation ofa large-scale SaaS platform.
Advocating for best practices (frontend engineering and large-scale application architecture).
Translating requirements into designs that achieve team goals.
Mentoring engineers within the team and in the broaderorganization.
Using your understanding of the system’s end-to-end architecture to assess and communicate implications of design choices.
What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
Communicating and sharing ideas within and across engineering teams, as well as with Product, Design, and other stakeholders.
Scaling an application from through mid-, and late-stage product lifecycles.
Designing the architecture of a large-scale frontend application.
Working with a well-established design system.
Informing our testing strategy with your opinions and experience in unit, integration, snapshot, and end-to-end testing.
Learning about Kubernetes, containers, and modern cloud-native infrastructure.
Writing React that leverages Typescript.
What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
The hiring manager for this role is Kate Kuchin, an Engineering Manager for TMC in MAPBU. She joined VMware two years ago, after years of experience building both enterprise and consumer software. She started her career at Google, and his since worked in technical and non-technical roles in startups.
The TMC Workflows team is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and you’ll never see any of the following in their job descriptions or interview loops:
Requirements around CS degrees, or any degrees for that matter.
Requirements around language experience.
Outrageous experience expectations (10+ years Kubernetes experience).
Puzzle solving/binary tree traversal/algorithmic optimization, etc.
