Garfield County is located in western Colorado and is experiencing a steady population and economic growth. The 2020 population estimate is 61,084, and the median household income is $72,898, with $68,811 being the state average. One percent fewer people live below the poverty level than the state average. The oil and gas industry has been prominent in Garfield County. Other major economic contributors are tourism and agriculture. The agriculture industry has seen an increased interest in small acreage and local food production. The communities in Garfield County (Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, Rifle, Battlement Mesa and Parachute) have diverse economies, shopping opportunities, and housing choices Garfield County is primarily rural, with 60% public land. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound and include hunting, fishing, hiking, rafting, biking, skiing, and other activities typically associated with Colorado. The Extension office is in the town of Rifle. Rifle offers easy access to a major interstate highway (I-70) and is within a one-hour drive time of the Grand Junction airport.

Position Summary

Colorado State University Extension and Garfield County are seeking an agriculture professional with the experience and skills to lead diverse and inclusive agriculture, horticulture, and natural resource programs for both adult and youth. This position develops, markets and delivers non-credit educational programming in response to community needs. The person will have a proven track record of developing and managing volunteers, building program capacity, creating innovative programming opportunities, and fostering both internal and external collaboration and teamwork. The Extension Agent will be an effective communicator with the experience and skills to engage with a variety of people and groups. The Garfield County Colorado Master Gardener program and volunteers will be under this individual’s guidance. The individual in this position works as a member of the local county Extension team and as a local representative of Colorado State University. This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the Garfield County Extension Director.

Required Job Qualifications

• Completed bachelor’s degree. • Degree must be conferred in agriculture, horticulture, natural resources, economics, business, livestock or a related field impacting the agriculture diversity of Garfield County. • A successful candidate without a completed master’s degree will be required to complete a master’s degree within five years from the start of employment. Failure to do so will result in termination unless a compelling reason is accepted by the Vice President of Engagement and Extension. • Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience. • Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations. • Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs. • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Completed master’s degree. • Personal and/or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes. • Experience in fund raising, grantsmanship, and cost recovery efforts. • Supervision of staff or volunteers. • Knowledge or program development and evaluation in the area of production agriculture, livestock, horticulture and natural resources. • Experience working with teams in planning educational events, fund raising and grantsmanship. • Experience marketing and/or delivering educational programming using online, mass media, and/or social media methods. • Bilingual (English-Spanish) speaking ability, including proficiency in conversational Spanish.

Job Duty Category Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting


• Develop and conduct educational programming in areas of production agriculture, horticulture, and natural resources in response to local and multi-county needs. • Provide programming for the Colorado Master Gardener and Junior Master Gardener® programs in Garfield County. • As part of the Garfield Extension team, continue to develop and enhance an effective, educational, results-oriented 4-H Youth Development Program that supports the growth and development of life skills among both youth and adult audiences in an urban/rural environment. • Work collectively to develop, implement, evaluate and report impacts of countywide non-credit educational programming in youth development for youth and adult audiences. • Travel to and participate in professional development, evening and weekend events and periodic activities requiring overnight stays. • Effectively communicate and coordinate resources, research and programming with personnel/staff of Colorado State University and other organizations. • Identify resources (grants, contracts, in-kind contributions, cost recovery fees, etc.) to enhance the program. Manage county, area, state and grant budget allocations where appropriate. Note: % of job assigned to this duty may be changed as the program develops.

• Identify and build collaborations with other agencies and groups (public and private) to address priority needs, including the management of natural resources. • Support and build partnerships between CSU Extension and public schools FFA programs throughout Garfield County. • Build partnerships with other youth programs throughout Garfield County, i.e. Garfield County Outdoors, Youth in Soil Conservation, and Colorado Mountain College. • Work effectively as a member of the Garfield County 4-H team providing leadership as appropriate, particularly in youth agriculture and livestock. • Develop and work with advisory groups and local leaders, and cooperate with Extension Agents in other counties, to assess informal education needs in the area, develop/revise plans of work, implement educational strategies, and measure and report programmatic impacts. • Develop strong working relationship with local Extension staff, university staff, local schools, county departments, community leaders, agencies and institutions to enhance local youth development programming. • Promote programming for diverse audiences and assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies including reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences. • Maintain a close working relationship with Board of County Commissioners, including responding to requests for assistance. • Develop and manage external partnerships and funding sources to support programming efforts.
