Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

An Environmental Planner position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), to be assigned at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The Environmental Planner will provide support to the Environmental Office in complying with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This position will provide technical expertise at Fort Polk to ensure compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for federal actions on the installation. Federal actions may include, but is not limited to, military training, habitat management, and United States Fish and Wildlife Service requirements. The Environmental Planner will work with the NEPA, Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRMP), Threatened and Endangered Species (TES), Maneuver Damage (ManDam), and other programs within the Fort Polk Conservation Branch. This position will work with other CEMML employees as well as Federal employees in a collaborative setting to ensure compliance with Federal regulations by researching and writing NEPA documents, serving on interdisciplinary teams, coordinating with Federal entities to evaluate proposed actions, and conducting independent field surveys, among other responsibilities.

Required Job Qualifications

The successful candidate must be legally eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

• BS/BA in environmental science, natural resource management, or related field is required.
• Two years of experience working in a natural resources field.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• Ability to conduct strenuous field work in weather extremes, notable high heat and humidity on rugged terrain is required.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and its implementing guidelines. • Experience with environmental analysis preparation for Environmental Impact Statements, environmental Assessments, Records of Environmental Consideration and Categorical Exclusion documents. • Diversity of experience within different natural resource fields • Experience with technical writing and oral presentation.
• Experience in environmental monitoring and analysis • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. • Experience working with ESRI ArcGIS. • Experience with field data. • Experience working within military or federal land management units.

• Research and write NEPA documents, including Records of Environmental Consideration and Environmental Assessments. • Serve on interdisciplinary teams to produce highly complex Environmental Impact Statements. • Coordinate with Fort Polk, U.S. Forest Service and other representatives, evaluate proposed actions for potential environmental impacts, independently determine the level of analysis required, conduct the analysis, and prepare appropriate level of NEPA documentation (EA, EIS, REC). • Communicate with CEMML project manager and provide deliverables.
