Graphic Packaging International Lab Technician in Louisville, Colorado

With limited, to direct supervision from the Laboratory Manager, theLaboratory Technician (LT) performs chemical laboratory functions (esp.coating research, formulations, materials ID, and analysis), andmaterials engineering in support of Corporate RandD for new productdevelopment, and existing business/plant support. The LT also performsphysical analyses (as needed) related to materials used in packagingmanufacturing. Also, performs testing in relation to the design andperformance of packaging used in cooking applications. * Assists in material-related projects and programs in support of GlobalRandD, especially relating to coatings, coating chemistry,formulations, coating development, and research. * Supervised formulary and materials analysis in direct support of theprojects assigned to the Laboratory Manager. * 'Typical' wet-chemistry laboratory techniques including:extractions, formulary, mixing, pH, viscosity, NVR, etc. * Optical/digital microscopy and 'general' lab analyses in supportof MW, and other initiatives including cooking analysis, andreverse-engineering for the detailed break-down of individual components ofsamples for thickness, structural ID, etc. * Conducts analytical analysis of paperboard, films, adhesives,inks and coatings via FTIR and DSC analytical techniques. * Performs cooking/performance evaluations of microwave packagingstructures. * Develop and evaluate new procedures for the 'chemical' analyses ofMW, and folding carton substrates. * Writes detailed reports and emails stating results and conclusions,and future course of action from the lab work completed. BA/BS in chemistry required. 3-5 years' experience in a 'working'lab environment achieved through school/university, and/or workexperience/job functions. Coating/ink experience acquired through workwithin the packaging, or chemical industries is a strong asset to thisposition, and may receive additional consideration. FTIR and DSCexperience, and knowledge also a definite benefit, especiallyfamiliarization with Thermo Electron's Omnic software packages for FTIRanalytical techniques. Additional skills and coursework, knowledge and/orexperience in; polymers, paper production and test methods, and foodscience related to microwave cooking is also desired. Ability to lift up to 40-50 lbs; able to spend considerable time infront of a computer monitor or looking through a microscope withoutconsiderable eye strain. Communicates and works effectively and safely aroundsometimes dangerous chemicals and chemical environments. The ability to workthroughout the lab as a cross-functional employee, as needed, and in timesof high-stress, quick/priority requests.
